Our Commitment

thegovernement.uk is committed to making the GovSecure Portal accessible to all authorised users, including those with disabilities. We aim to meet the requirements of the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) Accessibility Regulations 2018, which are based on the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA.

Compliance Status

The GovSecure Portal is partially compliant with WCAG 2.1 Level AA. The following features are in place:

• All interactive elements are keyboard-navigable.
• Colour contrast ratios meet or exceed the 4.5:1 minimum for normal text.
• Form inputs are associated with descriptive labels.
• Focus indicators are visible on all interactive elements.
• Semantic HTML is used throughout, including landmark regions (nav, main, header, footer).
• All images include descriptive alternative text, or empty alt attributes where decorative.
• The portal is usable at 200% browser zoom without loss of content or functionality.

Known Limitations

We are aware of the following accessibility limitations and are working to address them:

• Secure Email module: HTML-rendered email bodies from external sources may not fully meet WCAG standards, as their content is outside our direct control.
• Document viewer: Uploaded documents (PDF, DOCX) are not guaranteed to be accessible; this is the responsibility of the document author.
• Calendar module: Complex date-picker interactions may present challenges for screen reader users. We are reviewing this component for a future update.

Technical Specifications

The GovSecure Portal relies on the following technologies for conformance:

• HTML5
• CSS3 (including ARIA roles and properties)
• JavaScript (React 19)

The portal has been tested with the following assistive technologies: NVDA with Firefox, JAWS with Chrome, and VoiceOver with Safari on macOS.

Reporting Accessibility Issues

If you experience an accessibility barrier on this portal, or if you require content in an alternative format, please contact the Security Team using the Contact Security Team form. We aim to respond to accessibility queries within 5 working days.

The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) is responsible for enforcing the Public Sector Bodies Accessibility Regulations in England, Scotland, and Wales.
